Diminutives

Short chapter, disproportionate payoff. The -inho ending is not a cuteness feature — it is the main politeness and softening device in Brazilian speech, and Portuguese without it sounds blunt to a Brazilian ear.

Grammar

1. The rule

Drop the final vowel, add -inho (masculine) or -inha (feminine).

2. The `-zinho` variant

If the word ends in a stressed vowel, or in -n, -r, -l, -m, or a nasal, use -zinho and keep the whole word:

3. Spelling changes

Same sound-preserving changes as everywhere else:

c → qu: pouco (a little) → pouquinho
g → gu: amigo (friend) → amiguinho

4. What it actually does

Size is the least common meaning. The real functions:

Um cafezinho is what Brazilians order. Not um café. It is the default form of the word in a bar or bakery.

Um minutinho and rapidinho are how people signal I'll be right with you and this won't take long.

Um probleminha is how a problem gets introduced without alarming anyone. Recognising this matters — if someone says Tem um probleminha, it is a real problem, presented gently.

5. The augmentative — brief note

The opposite ending is -ão (masculine) / -ona (feminine), meaning big:

You will hear it. problemão is worth knowing — it is the opposite of probleminha and signals a real difficulty.

6. When not to use it

Diminutives are informal. In a bank, a hospital, or with o senhor / a senhora, use the plain form. They are for bars, shops, taxis, casual conversation, and neighbours — which is most of your day.

What to take from this chapter

Drop the final vowel, add -inho / -inha. After a stressed vowel or -r/-l/-m/-n, add -zinho.
It is about politeness and softening far more than about size.

probleminha = a manageable problem. problemão = a serious one.
Informal register. Drop it with officials and in formal settings.
