Subjunctive by trigger

This handbook skips most of the subjunctive. It cannot skip all of it, because Brazilians use two subjunctive forms in ordinary daily speech and there is no way around them.

The approach here is triggers, not paradigms. You do not learn "the subjunctive mood." You learn a short list of words that force a special verb form, and the forms of ten verbs. That is enough.

Grammar

1. Two subjunctives to care about

Tense Triggered by Example
Future subjunctive se, quando, enquanto about the future Quando eu **chegar**
Present subjunctive espero que, talvez, quer que, para que Espero que **seja** bom

The future subjunctive is the one you will need most. It is also, conveniently, the easier one.

2. Future subjunctive — how to build it

Take the eles form of the past tense (ch. 14), drop -am.

Infinitive Meaning eles past Future subjunctive
falar to speak falaram falar
comer to eat comeram comer
ser / ir to be / to go foram for
estar to be (state) estiveram estiver
ter to have tiveram tiver
fazer to do, make fizeram fizer
poder can puderam puder
querer to want quiseram quiser
ver to see viram vir
vir to come vieram vier
dar to give deram der
saber to know souberam souber

For regular verbs the result is identical to the infinitive. falarfalar. comercomer. chegarchegar. So for three quarters of all verbs, there is nothing to learn — you just use the dictionary form.

Only the irregular verbs produce something new, and there are ten of them. The essential four: for, tiver, estiver, puder.

Note the collision: vervir in the future subjunctive, which is identical to the infinitive of vir (to come). And virvier. Context sorts it out.

Endings for the other persons: add -em for vocês/eles (falarem, forem, tiverem). You mostly need the singular.

3. The future subjunctive triggers

Trigger Meaning Example
quandowhen (future)Quando eu **chegar**
seif (real condition, future)Se eu **tiver** tempo
enquanto [+]while (future)Enquanto eu **estiver** aqui
assim que [+]as soon asAssim que eu **puder**
depois queafter (future)Depois que eu **comer**

The rule: if quando or se points at the future, use this form. If quando points at the past, use the ordinary past tense.

Portuguese Time Verb form
Quando eu **chegar**, eu te falofuturefuture subjunctive
Quando eu **cheguei**, ele já foipastordinary past

English uses the present in both cases (when I arrive), which is why this trips people up.

4. Present subjunctive — how to build it

Take the eu form of the present, drop the -o, and swap the vowel. -ar verbs take -e. -er and -ir verbs take -a.

Infinitive Meaning eu present Present subjunctive
falar to speak falo fale
pagar to pay pago pague
ficar to stay fico fique
comer to eat como coma
abrir to open abro abra
ter to have tenho tenha
fazer to do, make faço faça
poder can posso possa
ver to see vejo veja
vir to come venho venha

Five verbs do not follow this and must be memorised:

Verb Meaning Present subjunctive
serto beseja (SAY-zhah)
estarto be (state)esteja (es-TAY-zhah)
irto go (vah)
darto give (deh)
saberto knowsaiba (SAI-bah)
quererto wantqueira (KAY-rah)

5. The present subjunctive triggers

Trigger Meaning
espero queI hope that
tomara quehopefully
talvezmaybe
quer quewant (someone) to
é melhor queit's better that
para que / pra queso that
antes quebefore
duvido que [+]I doubt that
não acho queI don't think that

Note the asymmetry: Eu acho que takes the ordinary indicative (Eu acho que **é** caro), but Eu não acho que takes the subjunctive (Eu não acho que **seja** caro). In practice, Brazilians often use the indicative even after the negative. Do not lose sleep over it.

6. What you can safely skip

  • The imperfect subjunctive (fosse, tivesse) — used in hypotheticals: Se eu tivesse dinheiro… (if I had money). Recognise it; you can avoid producing it by rephrasing.
  • All the compound subjunctive tenses.
  • The full trigger list, which runs to dozens of expressions.

7. The realistic minimum

If you learn only this much, you will be fine:

Phrase Form
Quando eu **chegar**when I arrive
Quando eu **for**when I go
Se eu **puder**if I can
Se **tiver**if there is
Se você **quiser**if you want
Espero que **seja** bomI hope it's good
Talvez eu **vá**maybe I'll go
Tomara que **dê** certo [+]hopefully it works out

Eight phrases. That is the working subjunctive.

Examples

Future subjunctive with quando

Portuguese Respelling English
Quando eu chegar, eu te faloKWAHN-doo eh-oo sheh-GAR…When I arrive, I'll let you know
Quando eu for, eu compro… eh-oo for…When I go, I'll buy it
Quando eu tiver tempo… CHEE-vehr TEM-pooWhen I have time

Quando você quiserKWAHN-doo voh-SEH kee-ZEHRWhenever you want
Quando a gente chegar no hotel… sheh-GAR noo oh-TEWWhen we get to the hotel

Future subjunctive with se

Portuguese Respelling English
Se eu tiver tempo, eu vousee eh-oo CHEE-vehr TEM-pooIf I have time, I'll go
Se eu puder, eu ajudosee eh-oo poo-DEHRIf I can, I'll help
Se você quiser, a gente vai junto [+]… kee-ZEHR…If you want, we'll go together
Se tiver mesa, a gente come aquisee CHEE-vehr MEH-zah…If there's a table, we'll eat here
Se não tiver, a gente vai pro outrosee nowng CHEE-vehr…If there isn't, we'll go to the other one

Se for caro, eu não comprosee for KAH-roo…If it's expensive, I won't buy it
Se ele vier, me falasee EH-lee vee-EHR mee FAH-lahIf he comes, tell me

Regular verbs — nothing new to learn

Notice these look exactly like the infinitive.

Portuguese English
Quando eu chegarWhen I arrive
Quando eu pagarWhen I pay
Se eu comprarIf I buy
Quando abrirWhen it opens
Se custar muitoIf it costs too much
Depois que eu comerAfter I eat
Assim que [+] eu falar com eleAs soon as I speak to him

Present subjunctive

Portuguese Respelling English
Espero que seja bomes-PEH-roo kee SAY-zhah bongI hope it's good
Espero que esteja aberto… es-TAY-zhah ah-BEHR-tooI hope it's open
Espero que dê certo… deh SEHR-tooI hope it works out
Tomara que não chova [+]toh-MAH-rah kee nowng SHOH-vahHopefully it doesn't rain
Talvez eu vá amanhãtahw-VEHS eh-oo vah…Maybe I'll go tomorrow
Talvez seja melhor [+]… SAY-zhah meh-LYORMaybe it's better
Ele quer que a gente váEH-lee kehr kee ah ZHEN-chee vahHe wants us to go
É melhor que você fiqueeh meh-LYOR kee voh-SEH FEE-keeIt's better that you stay

Past quando — ordinary past, no subjunctive

Contrast these with the future examples above.

Portuguese English
Quando eu cheguei, estava fechadoWhen I arrived, it was closed
Quando a gente foi, tinha muita genteWhen we went, there were a lot of people
Quando ele falou, eu não entendiWhen he spoke, I didn't understand

The rephrase escape hatch

If a subjunctive form escapes you, restructure. These pairs mean roughly the same thing:

Subjunctive Avoided
Espero que seja bom Acho que é bom
Talvez eu vá Eu não sei se vou
Quando eu chegar, eu te falo Eu chego e te falo
Se você quiser Você quer?
É melhor que você fique Você deveria [+] ficar

This is a legitimate strategy, not cheating. But quando and se about the future are common enough that you should learn for, tiver, estiver, puder, and quiser properly.

What to take from this chapter

  1. Learn triggers, not the mood. quando, se, espero que, talvez.
  2. Future subjunctive = eles past tense minus -am. For regular verbs, that is just the infinitive.
  3. Memorise five: for, tiver, estiver, puder, quiser.
  4. Present subjunctive: memorise seja, esteja, , , saiba.
  5. quando about the future takes the subjunctive; quando about the past takes the ordinary past.
  6. When stuck, rephrase.
